A normal semen analysis result usually falls within certain reference ranges doctors use to evaluate male fertility. From what I’ve read, normal semen volume is generally around 1.5 mL or more, sperm concentration should be at least 15 million sperm per mL, and total motility is usually considered normal above 40%. Morphology (normal sperm shape) is often considered acceptable at 4% or higher using strict criteria.

What surprised me during our own fertility workup was that one abnormal number doesn’t automatically mean infertility. A guy can have lower morphology but strong motility and still conceive naturally. Fertility specialists usually look at the entire picture instead of obsessing over a single value.

Another thing people don’t realize is how much semen analysis results can fluctuate. Fever, stress, smoking, alcohol, poor sleep, or even recent illness can temporarily affect count and motility. That’s why many clinics recommend repeating the test after a few weeks before making conclusions.

Also, “normal” results don’t guarantee pregnancy. Plenty of couples with textbook semen analysis numbers still need fertility treatment, while some with borderline results conceive naturally. The ranges are more of a guideline than a pass/fail test.

Below is the normal range of various parameters in a semen analysis:

Parameter

What is it?

Normal value

Sperm count

The number of sperm in the total ejaculate

40 million/ejaculate

Sperm concentration

The number of sperm in an ml of semen

20 million/ml

Sperm volume

The measure of semen volume per ejaculate

1.5–7.6 mL

Sperm motility

Measure of the sperm’s ability to swim

40% +

Progressive motility

Proportion of sperm that move in straight lines or large circles

32% +

Sperm morphology

The percentage of sperm that is normal in shape & size

4% +

Sperm vitality

Percentage of live spermatozoa with membrane intact

More than 58% live sperm

Besides, a pH of 7.2 – 8 is considered normal (2) and the sperm should not have agglutination (sticking together in clusters).

All of these factors individually and collectively can provide a good indication of a your fertility.

Sperm parameters for pregnancy:

Anywhere between 40 million to 300 million sperm per ml is considered a normal sperm count for men.

Every sperm sample has some percentage of immotile sperm but at atleast 40% sperm motility is recommended if you’re planning a pregnancy.
