Fertility surgical procedures available in Thailand
Hysteroscopy
Used to find and treat conditions inside the uterine cavity that affect implantation -- polyps, submucosal fibroids, uterine septa, and adhesions. Performed as a day case. Operative hysteroscopy, where the issue is treated in the same procedure, is routine at major fertility hospitals.
Laparoscopy for endometriosis excision
Laparoscopic excision removes endometrial lesions and associated adhesions affecting tubal function and the pelvic environment. Thai fertility surgeons use excision rather than ablation for deeper lesions, which is relevant if you have previously been offered only ablation at home.
Hydrosalpinx removal
A fluid-filled blocked tube reduces IVF success rates by allowing fluid to reflux into the uterus. Surgeons here address this by either removing the tube (salpingectomy) or blocking it close to the uterus (occlusion), depending on how much of the tube is affected.
Ovarian cyst removal
Endometriomas and large functional cysts are removed laparoscopically before stimulation. Surgeons use ovarian-sparing technique to protect follicle count, which matters if your AMH is already low.
Myomectomy
Submucosal fibroids can be removed hysteroscopically as a day procedure. Larger intramural fibroids require laparoscopic or open myomectomy, a longer recovery, and a mandatory wait before IVF stimulation can begin.
How long should you plan for in Thailand?
Hysteroscopy: five to seven days, including consultation, procedure, and pre-travel clearance.
Laparoscopic procedures: seven to ten days. Most patients stay one to two nights in hospital.
Laparoscopic or open myomectomy: ten to fourteen days, with a two to four night hospital stay.
If you're combining surgery with IVF, your clinic will add the mandatory recovery gap -- typically six to eight weeks for laparoscopic procedures -- into your overall protocol. You will not do both in the same trip.
Fertility surgery regulations in Thailand
There are no nationality or marital status restrictions on access to the surgical procedures on this page. International patients are treated at the same private hospitals as Thai nationals.
Operative reports and pathology results are issued in English at accredited private hospitals. Request a full surgical summary before you leave -- you'll need it for continuity of care at home.
The embryo export restriction applies to IVF, not to surgery. But if surgery is your first step toward IVF, and you're considering where to do your transfers, plan the full pathway before you book.
Frequently asked questions
How soon after laparoscopic surgery can I start IVF?
For most laparoscopic procedures, clinics require six to eight weeks before stimulation begins. Your surgeon confirms the interval after reviewing operative findings.
Will ovarian cyst removal affect my egg count?
Endometrioma removal carries a risk of reducing ovarian reserve if follicular tissue is lost. Your AMH and antral follicle count should be measured before surgery and rechecked before your IVF cycle.
Can I do surgery and IVF in one trip?
In most cases, no. Recovery needs to be complete before stimulation starts. Some patients combine a diagnostic hysteroscopy with early IVF workup in the same visit, then return for the full cycle.
What happens to my embryos if I want to transfer in another country?
Embryos created in Thailand cannot be exported under Thai medical regulations. All transfers must be completed in Thailand. This applies to all patients, including international ones.
