Why donor eggs may be recommended

Egg quality declines with age, and some patients experience premature ovarian insufficiency or very low ovarian reserve earlier than expected. When stimulation cycles produce few or no eggs, or when multiple IVF cycles have failed due to poor embryo quality, donor eggs can significantly improve the likelihood of a successful transfer.

Donor matching and availability

Donors go through medical, genetic, and psychological screening before being approved. Recipient profiles typically include physical characteristics, blood type, education, and health history. In countries that permit open-identity donation, some information may be accessible to the donor-conceived child after age 18.

Matching wait times vary by country and clinic. Some programs maintain egg banks with immediately available donors; others work with a waiting list of fresh, matched donors. Denmark, for example, works only with live matched donors and does not use frozen donor egg banks. Confirm current availability and timelines directly with the clinic you are considering.

The cycle process

The donor undergoes the same stimulation and retrieval protocol as a standard IVF cycle. Retrieved eggs are fertilized with sperm from the recipient's partner or a sperm donor. The recipient's uterine lining is prepared with estrogen and progesterone. When the lining reaches the required thickness, a fresh or frozen embryo is transferred.

Fresh donor cycles require synchronizing donor and recipient cycles, which adds coordination time. Frozen embryo transfers using previously vitrified donor embryos allow more scheduling flexibility and are increasingly common.

Legal considerations across countries

Egg donation regulations differ significantly by country. Some require open-identity donation, others maintain full anonymity. Compensation rules also vary: some countries allow financial payment to donors while others permit only reimbursement of direct expenses. For recipients from outside the treatment country, confirming parental rights in both their home country and the treatment country is an important step before proceeding.
