Anxiety after IVF

After the long IVF journey, I imagined the only challenge was getting pregnant and rest of the journey would be smooth. No one warned me how taxing it could be. At first the anxiety of the pregnancy test, then waiting for every ultrasound, every test.

Every little cramp makes me want to reach out to my doctor to see what’s going on. Every discharge down there has me running to the washroom to see if everything is ok. I’m trying to think straight and not worry so much but it’s hard. Next appointment isn’t for another week. I can’t seem to get there fast enough. When does this become easy?

The two week wait is brutal. I was so anxious but even after you get pregnant being worried is a bit natural. You’re allowed to feel what you feel. Journaling helps and I made a vision board with a baby picture and all the things I love. Just surround yourself with people that you love and know that what has to be, will be.

I will be 19 weeks soon and you will get there too. Hang in there. Love

I had way more anxiety after IVF than before it honestly. People think getting to transfer day or even getting a positive test suddenly makes you calm, but for me it was the opposite. After putting so much time, money, hormones, and hope into it, every little symptom became terrifying.

The worst part was the waiting:

  1. waiting for fertilization updates
  2. waiting for embryo reports
  3. waiting during the two week wait
  4. waiting for beta numbers
  5. waiting for scans

Your brain basically never relaxes because you feel like everything could change overnight.

I also think IVF makes some people feel like they have to “earn” a good outcome by doing everything perfectly, which creates even more pressure. I remember overthinking things like walking too much, sleeping wrong, eating the wrong food, all of it.

What helped me most was staying away from doom-scrolling IVF forums at 2am and talking to people who actually understood the process. Anxiety during IVF is incredibly common. It doesn’t mean you’re weak or negative. It’s just what happens when something matters deeply and feels completely out of your control.
