How is anyone able to afford the high cost of IVF in Canada?

It costs upword of $20,000 and has such low success rates. With the economy slowing down, IVF costs in Canada are becoming harder to bear. How're y'all doing it?

Well, either they work a lot and have huge savings, they try to get some kind of funding, or they travel to a more affordable location like Mexico or India.

Generations of Hope, a Calgary-based charitable organization provides grants to couples seeking IVF treatment but they said that fewer people seek IVF funding now because even after the grant, the cost of IVF remains too high to be afforded by an average couple.

In some states, you can have partial fuding for the cycle.

In the state of Ontario, the government funds one cycle of IVF if you are under the age of 43 and have a valid Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card. However, medications, embryo storage,, and other things are not covered so patients still end up paying 40-50% of the bill.

The Government of British Columbia also announced their IVF funding program in 2025.

Given the limited availability, there is usually a long waiting time of these.

Other states that offer IVF funding in Canada

  • Quebec – You can get full coverage for one cycle of IVF
  • Manitoba & Nova Scotia – 40% of the IVF cost can be claimed as tax credit (max $8,000).
  • Prince Edward Island – Reimbursement between $5,000 and $10,000 (depending on your family income)
  • Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick – Reimbursement of upto $5,000 on IVF
  • Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the territories – No funding for IVF

One in every six couples in Canada faces infertility, and with IVF costs running over $20,000 for a single cycle, IVF without provincial funding is difficult especially as the economy is slowing down.
