IUI in Thailand is available to married couples at private fertility clinics in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, at costs significantly lower than in Australia, the UK, or the US. Under Thailand's 2015 Assisted Reproductive Technology Act, all ART procedures including IUI require a valid marriage certificate. This applies regardless of nationality. Thailand legalized same-sex marriage on January 23, 2025, making it the first country in Southeast Asia to do so. Legally married same-sex couples now meet the marriage certificate requirement for IUI. Single women cannot access IUI in Thailand under current law.

Who can have IUI in Thailand?

Thailand's 2015 ART Act requires a valid marriage certificate for all IUI procedures. The key eligibility rules are:

  1. You must be legally married. Both Thai nationals and international patients must provide a certified marriage certificate in English.
  2. For non-Thai couples, the marriage certificate must be notarized or authenticated by your home country's embassy in Bangkok. Confirm the exact process with your clinic before traveling.
  3. Same-sex married couples are eligible since January 23, 2025. Confirm current clinic policy before booking, as individual clinics are still aligning their processes with the new law.
  4. Single women cannot access IUI in Thailand. Legislative reform is under discussion but had not been enacted as of early 2026.
  5. Most clinics set an upper age limit of 40 for IUI. Beyond this age, clinics typically recommend IVF or ICSI directly.
  6. IUI is not appropriate if you have confirmed tubal blockage, severe male factor infertility, or significant endometriosis. These cases are directed to IVF.

Donor sperm IUI is legally permitted. The sale of sperm is prohibited, but licensed sperm banks operate in Thailand. Confirm donor sperm availability and the importation process with your clinic directly.

Is IUI legal in Thailand?

Yes. IUI is regulated under Thailand's 2015 ART Act, administered by the Medical Council of Thailand.

  1. A valid marriage certificate is required for all patients, Thai and international
  2. Commercial trading of sperm is prohibited; donor compensation is limited to reimbursement of expenses
  3. Gender selection through IUI or any other ART procedure is prohibited except for medical reasons such as prevention of a genetic disease
  4. Same-sex married couples are eligible since the Marriage Equality Act came into force on January 23, 2025
  5. Single women and unmarried couples cannot access IUI under current law

The Ministry of Public Health indicated in February 2024 that a law amendment to extend ART access to single women was being considered. As of early 2026, it had not been enacted. Source: Bangkok Post, February 13, 2024.

IUI success rates in Thailand

Thailand has no national ART registry, so no independently audited country-level IUI outcome data is published. Rates vary between clinics.

As a reference, Thai fertility hospitals consistently report IUI success rates of 10 to 15% per cycle for women under 35 with unexplained infertility or mild male factor issues. Sources: Phyathai Sriracha Hospital; Millennium IVF Clinic Bangkok; Bookimed Thailand data, 2024-2025.

Factors that directly affect your outcome:

  1. Your age: the single strongest predictor of success
  2. Total motile sperm count after washing: the widely cited clinical minimum is 1 million motile sperm per insemination (source: Bangkok Hospital)
  3. Whether ovarian stimulation is used: stimulated cycles produce higher success rates than natural cycle IUI
  4. Number of mature follicles at insemination
  5. Endometrial thickness on the day of the procedure

Most Thai clinics recommend moving to IVF or ICSI if three IUI cycles are unsuccessful. After the third failed cycle, cumulative success rates plateau and IVF becomes the more effective path. Source: Phyathai Sriracha Hospital clinical guidelines.

How many IUI cycles to plan for

  1. Each stimulated cycle takes 12 to 14 days from monitoring start to insemination
  2. Some clinics allow initial monitoring to be done at a clinic in your home country, reducing in-Thailand time to 5 to 7 days. Confirm this with your clinic before booking.
  3. Bangkok has the highest concentration of specialist fertility clinics and the best international flight connections. Phuket and Chiang Mai have fewer options.
  4. If planning up to three cycles, build at least three months into your timeline before making a decision on escalation to IVF.

IUI in Thailand: frequently asked questions

Can foreign couples use a non-Thai marriage certificate for IUI?

Yes. Your home country marriage certificate is accepted. It must be certified, accompanied by a certified English translation, and in most cases authenticated by your embassy in Bangkok. Confirm the exact documentation requirements with your clinic before traveling.

Can same-sex couples have IUI in Thailand?

Legally yes, since January 23, 2025, when Thailand's Marriage Equality Act came into force. Legally married same-sex couples now satisfy the marriage certificate requirement. In practice, individual clinics are still adapting their processes. Contact your clinic directly to confirm their current policy before booking.

Can single women have IUI in Thailand?

No. The 2015 ART Act restricts IUI to married couples. Single women cannot legally access IUI in Thailand. The Ministry of Public Health indicated in early 2024 that reform was being considered, but no amendment had been passed as of early 2026.

How does IUI cost compare to IVF in Thailand?

IUI costs a fraction of IVF per cycle. However, with per-cycle success rates of 10 to 15% for IUI versus 45 to 65% for IVF in women under 35, three failed IUI cycles including travel and accommodation can approach the cost of a single IVF cycle. Discuss the decision threshold with your clinic at the outset.

What documents should I bring to a Thai clinic for IUI?

  1. Certified marriage certificate with certified English translation
  2. Passports for both partners
  3. Existing fertility test results: semen analysis, hormonal panel, uterine imaging
  4. Prescription history for any fertility medications previously taken

When should I move from IUI to IVF in Thailand?

After three unsuccessful IUI cycles, most Thai specialists recommend moving to IVF. If you are over 38, have tubal damage, endometriosis, or severe male factor infertility, your clinic may recommend skipping IUI entirely. Agree on the escalation criteria with your specialist at your first consultation.
