If you traveled abroad for IVF, what do you wish you had known beforehand?

Are there any tips for anyone considering a trip across the border for IVF?

Traveling for IVF means you're coordinating flights, hotels, clinic appointments, blood tests, medications, and sometimes visa or immigration requirements, all while you're already stressed. First thing is to factor in a few extra days if you can because treatment timelines can change depending on your cycle and how you respond to stimulation.

Also, don't choose a clinic based only on low price. Read about the doctor, ask who will actually perform your scans and egg retrieval, check how easy they are to reach if you have questions, and make sure they provide your treatment records in English if that's important. Good communication is worth paying a little more for.

Another thing I underestimated was medication planning. Some drugs aren't available everywhere, and bringing them across borders can have restrictions. Ask the clinic for a complete medication schedule before you travel and check what you can legally bring into the country.

Finally, budget for more than just the quoted IVF package. Medications, extra blood tests, embryo freezing, PGT, anesthesia, storage fees, accommodation, transportation, and a possible longer stay can add up quickly. I found it helpful to create a spreadsheet with a "worst case" budget rather than assuming everything would go exactly as planned.

Overall, I don't regret traveling for treatment, but I definitely wish I'd spent as much time planning the trip as I did researching IVF success rates. It would have made the whole experience much less stressful.

Yes, its not as scary as it seems. As long as you do your due diligence and pick the right doctor/clinic, you could have a really good experience.

Tips:

  1. Get a medical visa - in case you need to extend your trip, it would be much easier and a letter from your clinic would be helpful
  2. Make sure to ask the clinic about payment methods and any additional payments that might be required after you're there. Get it in writing.
  3. Ask about language interpreters (if you really need them)
  4. If you're into sight-seeing and travelling, you might not need to stay right next to the clinic. Normally you visit the clinic every 2-3 days, and its good to be able to use the rest of your time exploring. Takes your mind off the treatment stress.
  5. Research the food. You might be eating healthy for the past 2-3 months before IVF but if you're overseas and eating poorly DURING your treatment, it could offset all your advantage. Eat well, remember to carry your supplements/vitamins.
  6. Plan the trip. Don't just focus on the treatment. Enjoy.
