What is delayed IVF?

“Delayed IVF” can actually mean different things depending on the context, which is why people get confused by the term.

Most commonly, it refers to a delayed embryo transfer: where embryos are frozen first and transferred in a later cycle instead of immediately after egg retrieval. Some clinics call this a “freeze-all” approach.

The idea is that the body sometimes responds better once hormone levels settle down after stimulation. Doctors may recommend it if:

1. estrogen levels are very high
2. there’s risk of OHSS
3. the uterine lining doesn’t look ideal
4. PGT testing is being done

There’s also another meaning where an IVF cycle itself gets delayed or postponed because of cysts, hormone issues, illness, thin lining, poor response, etc.

A lot of patients initially panic when they hear “delay,” but in many cases it’s actually done to improve implantation conditions rather than reduce chances. IVF timing is often more strategic than people realise.

Delayed IVF usually refers to a situation where eggs are retrieved but not fertilized immediately because they are still immature.

Instead of discarding those eggs, the lab may keep them in special culture conditions for additional maturation before attempting fertilization later. This is sometimes called “rescue maturation” or delayed insemination.

The goal is basically:

“Give the eggs more time to mature outside the body.”

It’s not the standard IVF process, and success rates can vary because immature eggs are generally harder to work with. But in some cases, it gives patients another chance when a retrieval unexpectedly produces a high number of immature eggs.
